Get to Know Your Kids

Each one of your children have likes, dislikes, opinions, worries, desires, fears, wishes and beliefs whether you know about them or not. If your children feel they can talk to you about these things, and have an opportunity to share them with you, your relationship with them will strengthen, trust will grow, and cooperation will improve. So how do you get them to open up? By asking questions.

But be warned. If they feel any criticism, even the slightest bit, they will shut down and not share their feelings with you for days, months, or even years.

One good place to ask questions is at family meal time. “So, tell us one good thing that happened to you today.” Questions get people thinking, and interesting conversations can result. Go around the table and give everyone a chance to respond.

You can also use questions to strike up a conversation in the car, or anywhere for that matter. Remember, no criticizing, lecturing or arguing. Just listen and try to understand. Here is a list of possible questions to get you started. I'll bet you will be surprised and amazed at what your children think about various subjects.
